A soldier, a singer, a big bear bringer...
Diverse group joins our Board

At its 2010 Annual meeting on Wednesday, September 29th, the Board of Directors of the United Way of Windham County elected 4 new members: Glenn Herrin, Julianne Kowaliw, Bill LaCour, and Laura Sibilia.

Glenn Herrin has been a Vermont resident for his entire life, but is relatively new to Brattleboro. After growing up in Randolph, he spent over 20 years in the US Army in Field Artillery, Military Intelligence, and Information Systems Management before retiring in 2009 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division (two tours), the 10th Mountain Division, the 1st Armored Division, and the Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM), and has been on operational deployments to Panama, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, Haiti, and Iraq (again). Glenn's wife, Kathy, is a Speech-Language Pathologist who works in the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union. After working so long at the national level, Glenn is pleased to be able to get involved and make a difference at a much more local level. UWWC is very pleased that Glenn has agreed to "Live United" as a member of its Board of Directors.

Julianne Kowaliw, a resident of Swanzey, NH, has been with The Richards Group in Brattleboro since 2007. She is in the process of completing a degree program in Criminal Justice at Franklin Pierce College. Julie is an active volunteer, having given her time to the Monadnock Children's Museum, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Keene, the Keene Art Association, and the Keene Community Kitchen. She is eager to make a difference here in Windham County, where she now works. UWWC welcomes Julie's enthusiasm and giving spirit.

Bill LaCour, who with his wife, Alicia Law, resides in Westminster West, has had ties to the area since he began working for G.S. Precision in 1978. In 1992, he moved to the eastern shore of Maryland to follow a lifelong dream of managing a horse breeding and training facility. He returned to Vermont in 1994 to fill a sales position with a local business. In 1998, Bill began employment at Sovernet Communications where he is currently the Senior Sales Manager. Bill and Alicia have two grown children who reside out of state. With Alicia, Bill sings with "House Blend," an A capella chorus. Many of House Blend's concerts are benefits for non-profit agencies. Recent area concerts have included fundraisers on behalf of the Windham County Heat Fund. Bill's strong sales and marketing expertise, along with his commitment to the local community, will make him an excellent addition to the UWWC board.

Laura Sibilia, a resident of Windham County for the past 23 years, makes her home in East Dover with her husband, T.J., and their three children. A former reporter for the Valley News with a degree in Hotel Restaurant Management, Laura is the Executive Director of the Mount Snow Valley Chamber of Commerce, a position she has held since 2006. During Laura's tenure, the Chamber has developed and sponsored several events aimed at increasing tourism to the area, such as Bears in the Valley, Vermonsters of the Deerfield Valley, and the Vermont Life Wine & Harvest Festival. Laura serves on the Vermont Chamber Government Affairs Committee, the Dover Economic Development Committee, and the Tri-Town Economic Development Committee. She has been a Vice Chair of the Dover School Board for the past eight years, and is a Co-founder of Deerfield Valley Troop Support. UWWC is delighted to welcome Laura, with her energy, expertise, and sense of community, to the board.

The board also elected a new slate of officers for the coming year which included:

  • Leslie Morey---board chair
  • Bahman Mahdavi--vice chair
  • David Dunn-- treasurer
  • Shannon Weatherup--secretary
